Observations on the train
While sitting on the train this evening (I had to work late) I witnessed something so selfish and damaging, but so revealing to the nature of man. I first must confess, I find people’s behaviors in public intriguing. IN my people watching experience no more bizarre behavior happens then on the train late in the evening.
I sat down on the train 10 minutes before departure time at nearly the same time as a man did across from me. That man was on the phone and speaking on his cell to someone that I assumed was his wife, based on the parts of the conversation. Shortly after the train doors shut three women sat near this man and it was obvious they had enjoyed a few drinks. Well it didn’t take long until one was talking to the man and the flirtation began. She asked what he did; he asked where she lived, and so on; you know the scene. As they started to leave he handed her his business card and she said thanks. He looked and at me and genuinely seemed pleased with himself.
What caught me was a half an hour earlier this man was speaking to his wife and saying I love you and I can’t wait to be at home. Within just a few minutes of getting off that call his mind would have appeared to be on another woman and everything but going home.
Before you accuse me of jumping to conclusions, I have stated all of this to share a thought that this observation brought to mind. Isn’t this much like we treat our relationship with God? Are we any different then the Israelites offering worship to a man made god, bale, as Moses was on the mount with the one and only God? We are so easily tempted to pursue those things that satisfy our desires for temporal pleasure at all costs. The whole time we tell ourselves that it is a victimless crime; no one will get hurt, that no one will know. We actually think we are clever enough to keep sin in the boundaries we have defined? Do we actually think no one sees what we are doing? It amazes me that God can find anything in us to love, but I am so glad he does.
